The power went out about an hour before the
hurricane hit. Since then people here in a hotel in
Corpus Christi have been sitting in the dark,
listening to the wind and rain battering the windows
and doors.
It is estimated hundreds of thousands of residents
are without electricity. Reports of damaged power
lines and transformers mean it could be off for
weeks.
Most of those sheltering in the hotel with us were
forced to leave their homes in the centre of the town
for fear they would collapse or flood.
Grace Cruz, who is here with her family, only had
time to grab a bag before they had to flee their
house near the water.
Hurricane Harvey has already wrecked homes in
Texas
"Everything is left behind," Ms Cruz told Sky News.
"My boys say just pray and hope that when we do go
back that everything is still intact and that everybody
is safe in the neighbourhood, because I know elderly
people stayed behind."
Asked what she thought she would return back to, Ms
Cruz answered: "No home. It's sad. I've never been
through this and I don't wish it on anybody. It's just a
very bad time."
Hurricane Harvey gathered in power as it made its
way towards Texas, eventually bearing down with 130
mph winds.
Donald Trump faces a test on how he responds
to the crisis
It has now slowed to a category 1 hurricane, but that
brings its own dangers. The worry now is that rain
will linger over the area for days, dumping around
90cm of water on communities and putting lives at
risk from widespread flooding.
And this isn't just a test of Texans' resolve, but also
that of the President.
This hurricane is the fiercest to hit the US in a
decade and the first of such magnitude on Donald
Trump's watch.
He has promised aid to those affected and from
Camp David is readying "the firepower of the federal
government".
The real challenge will be revealed in the coming
days, when the true extent of the damage Hurricane
Harvey has brought in its wake finally becomes clear.
