An American student's parents have described how
their son was "totally deformed" when he returned
home after almost 18 months in a North Korean
prison.
Otto Warmbier died in June after being flown back
from Kim Jong-un's reclusive nation with a catalogue
of horrific injuries.
His parents Fred and Cindy Warmbier, have spoken
out about the horror they believe their son endured
before he was released to die, and the "humiliation"
the family have gone through at the hands of the
North Koreans .
Talking to CNN, Mr Warmbier branded his son's
captors "terrorists", before going into heartbreaking
detail about his injuries.
"Two days after Otto came home his fever sparked to
over 104 degrees," he said.
"He had this huge scar on his right foot," Mr Warmbier
continued. "He was on his death bed when he came
home to us. This was a horrible sight."
Mrs Warmbier added that the scar, which covered
Otto's 'entire foot' and was likely the result of him
living with an 'open wound' for many months.
"Our coroner did a visual. It covered the entire top of
his foot. How do you get a scar that covers the entire
top of your foot? She said it had to be an open wound
for months and months and months."
Mr Warmbier said the family was not prepared to see
the 22-year-old student in such a state and it was too
much for his wife and daughter to handle.
"I walk over to Otto and he is in this condition," said
Mr Warmbier. "He has a shaved head, his eyes are
darting around as big as saucers. He is blind, he is
deaf he has a feeding tube. He is a complete
vegetable.
"We weren't prepared for this at all. His hands and
legs were totally deformed.
"Our family and Otto were humiliated by the North
Koreans. Otto was tortured and essentially murdered."
They said Otto was deaf, blind, jerking uncontrollably
and making "inhuman" sounds when they met him on
a plane.
His teeth also looked like they had been rearranged
with pliers, his father said.
Mrs Warmbier added the family were speaking out
about his death to encourage people to never visit the
dictatorship.
"Nobody needs to go there," she said. "They show you
what they want you to see. I don't want to see
anyone else hurt or taken. They show you what they
want you to see. I don't want to see anyone else hurt
or taken."
Otto was released after North Korean officials claimed
he had fallen ill in prison and was in a coma.
Speaking on Fox &
Friends about the
moment he set
eyes on his son
again, Mr Warmbier
said: "When we
got halfway up the
steps (of the
plane) we heard
this howling,
involuntary
inhuman sound we
weren't really
certain what it
was.
"We climbed to the top of the steps we looked in Otto
was on the stretcher jerking violently making these
inhuman sounds.
"Cindy and (Otto's sister) Greta ran off the plane.
Austin (Otto's brother) and I walked over to Otto.
"Otto had a shaved head he had a feeding tube
coming out of his nose he was staring blankly into
space jerking violently.
"As we looked at him and tried to comfort him it
looked like someone had taken a pair of pliers and
rearranged his bottom teeth.
"North Korea isn't a victim they're terrorists."
Mrs Warmbier tearfully said: "They destroyed him."
She said that she had been optimistic that her son
could make a full recovery after his return to the
United States.
She told viewers: "What we pictured, because we're
optimists, was that Otto would be asleep and maybe
in a medically induced coma and our doctors here
would work with him and he'd get the best care and
love that he would come out of it."
Mr Warmbier said the couple had agreed to appear on
TV because they were angry about North Korea
claiming it was being victimised.
He stated: "Now we see North Korea claiming to be a
victim, that the world is picking on them, and we're
here to tell you that North Korea is not a victim,
they're terrorists.
"They kidnapped Otto, they tortured him, they
intentionally injured him, they're not victims, they're
terrorists."
North Korea claimed Otto had contracted botulism,
but US medics found no evidence to support this.
He was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being
convicted of trying to steal a propaganda poster from
his hotel in January last year.
