'It's just words!' Former Irish PM SAVAGES UK's generous offer to EU

The ex-Irish PM John Burton claimed it would be a
good idea for the UK to continue to pay into the EU for
another six years, rather than the proposed two-year
transitional period after Brexit .
Mr Burton said: “I think we need to know first of all,
what relationship Britain wants with the European
Union. Talking about a bespoke partnership, that’s just
words.
"It doesn’t contain any of the detail as to whether, for
example, the EU standards would be applied in Britain
and could be invigilated by the European Court of
Justice. “I think any transition agreement will have to
be approved by all 27 members of the European Union
and perhaps by their parliaments.
"It will have to be compliant with World Trade
Organisation rules in regard to more favoured nation
treatment of one country rather than another trade
partners of the European Union."
The former Irish PM was not impressed by the UK's
offer.
“I think any transition agreement will have to be
approved by all 27 members of the European Union
and perhaps by their parliaments. It will have to be
compliant with World Trade Organisation rules in
regard to more favoured nation treatment of one
country rather than another trade partners of the
European Union.
“The simplest thing may, in fact, be for Britain to
simply stay in the European Union by extending the
negotiating period from two years to six. In that way
perhaps we could avoid complications with the World
Trade Organisation and avoid some of the difficulties
that might arise in ratifying a transition agreement.
“It’s very difficult to draft a transition agreement until
you know what you are transitioning to, and Britain has
to make up its mind somehow about that. That’s
difficult obviously given the situation in the House of
Commons.”
Brussels is insisting that there must be progress on
the Irish border, citizens rights and the divorce bill
before it starts future talks.
Following the end of the fourth round of Brexit talks,
the EU’s chief negotiator said they are still “months
away” from making significant progress.
Michel Barnier said: "We managed to create clarity on
some points. On others, however, more work remains
to be done and we are not there yet."
Mr Barnier remained positive at the end of talks and
said: “I’m clear we’ve made considerable progress on
the issues that matter.
During the speech, Brexit secretary David Davis said
the UK is making “decisive steps forward” in its
negotiations with the EU. Mr Davis also made an effort
to provide more detail on the Irish side of discussions.
He said that the two sides had produced “draft
principles” on preserving the Common Travel Area,
which allows British and Irish citizens to travel freely
between the British Isles.
The EU Parliament will make their final decision at the
European Council summit in October on whether to
allow Brexit talks to progress.
