The Shadow Chancellor told a Hands Off Venezuela
conference in 2011 that Britain could learn a lesson
from mass mobilisation in Venezuela, then in the
throes of Hugo Chavez’s socialist revolution.
The riot-torn country is now in turmoil despite having
the greatest oil reserves in the world.
But Mr McDonnell, then president of the HOV
campaign, said it was a “shining example” to the
world, and joined a motion to fight the UK government
“until the final victory”.
In its report of the conference, HOV said: “John
McDonnell MP, HOV honorary president, spoke of the
upcoming strike on 30th June, and the fears the
ConDem government has of direct action.

“The
UK
movement could learn lessons on mobilisation from
Venezuela, he said. We need to bring this government
down, he declared, but build a socialist alternative at
the same time. What would be the point of removing
the government and replacing it with New Labour?
Venezuela is a shining example of what can be done
with mass participation.”
The meeting then passed a motion saying that its
members would work with the Latin American Coalition
Against Cuts (COLACOR) to bring about a general
strike and “throw everything we have” at the
government.
COLACOR is a Left-wing organisation for South
Americans working in the UK.
The motion stated: “We have seen how popular
uprising can bring down governments, defeat
corporations and restore power to the people. This is
only the beginning. We will continue to mobilise
against the cuts, alongside the other members of
COLACOR, by building a movement that not only
challenges the cuts but defeats them.

Footage emerged of Mr McDonnell calling for
'insurrection' in a 2013 speech
“We must organize, resist, unite, and fight. We have to
throw everything we have at this government of the
rich, including a general strike. We will fight hasta la
victoria siempre! (ever onward to victory!).“
News of the plot comes after footage emerged of Mr
McDonnell calling for “insurrection” in a 2013 speech,
as exclusively revealed by the Sunday Express in
June.
Calling for “direct action”, the Labour MP for Hayes
and Harlington, 66, said: “We want to bring this
government down by whatever mechanism we have.”
Since socialist dictator Nicolas Maduro took power in
2013 following Chavez’s death, thousands of
Venezuelans have protested over high levels of
criminal violence, corruption, hyperinflation and chronic
scarcity of goods due to the policies of the federal
government.
Demonstrations and riots have left 40 people dead and
led to Maduro declaring a state of emergency in 2016.
A recent study found 15 per cent of Venezuelans have
been reduced to eating food waste to survive.
A spokesman for Mr McDonnell declined to comment.
