The Prime Minister reportedly sent out Conservative
MP George Hollingberry to gauge the opinions of
Tories in the House of Commons.
Last month, Mrs May put herself on a collision course
with Tory critics by dramatically insisting she was “not
a quitter” and that she would lead her party into the
next election.
She declared “I am in this for the long term,” spelling
out a mission to give Britain a “brighter future…
standing tall” on the global stage.
One senior colleague who expressed concern at her
plans was allegedly told by Mr Hollingberry that the
“boss isn’t stupid” and “knows there is a game of
succession going on”.

Mr Hollingberry is reported to have been sent out to
collect intelligence following Parliament’s summer
recess.
One Tory MP is said to have claimed that the dissent
among the ranks will be diluted when it is reported
back to the Prime Minister because the messengers
“owe their whole existence to her survival”.
The MP reportedly added: “Never underestimate the
power of reinforcement of bunker mentality.”
This week Mrs May in an interview refused to explicitly
restate her pledge to fight the next election as party
leader.

When asked whether she would fight the next election,
Mrs May told ABC News: “Well, the next election isn’t
going to be until after Brexit — until after we withdraw
from the European Union.
“I have said this is a long-term challenge for the UK.”
In what will be another test of her leadership, Prime
Minister is set to give a key speech on Brexit in
Florence on Friday.
She is said to be seeking support for a two-year
transition deal which would see Brexit changes phased
in for a limited period after the UK formally leaves the
EU in March 2019.
In her speech she is set to signal that the UK will
continue payments to Brussels during some or all of
that period to retain access to the single market and
customs union, it has been reported.
During her speech, Mrs May is also reportedly
expected to reassure the other 27 EU members states
that Britain will not engage in a regulatory “race to the
bottom” after Brexit.
