Bombardier boosted by £6.2bn jets order

Canada’s Bombardier Aerospace won the deal for up
to 275 of its Challenger 300 and 605 business jets
from NetJets, a private aviation group owned by
Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway group.
The Montreal-based manufacturer will build the central
fuselages and engine casings for the aircraft at its
Belfast plant, which employs more than 5,000 people.

It said the order, the biggest in its history, will provide
extra job security for the staff at the former Short
Brothers plant.
The
deal
also
spells
good
news
for
employees of many of the company’s 700 to 800
suppliers in the UK.
It comes as Bombardier invests about £500million in
new workshops at the Belfast site to make the wings
for its new C-series mid-range jet.
A spokesman said: “People should understand that
Bombardier leads the business aircraft market, the UK
plays a major role in this sector.”
Aircraft charter and management group NetJets, which
serves businesses and wealthy individuals, has ordered
100 Challengers worth £1.67billion, plus options for
175 more and a maintenance deal lasting up to 15
years. Bombardier will deliver 75 of the jets in 2014
and 25 a year later. NetJets plans to use them in
North America and Europe.
Bombardier Business Aircraft’s president Steve Ridolfi
said: “We’re convinced the Challenger jets will
complement NetJets’ existing fleet perfectly.”
