Mr Davis told his friends that he plans to “retire” in
2019 when the UK officially leaves the EU.
This move could potentially cause a cabinet reshuffle
and a leadership challenge.
According to claims in the i newspaper, Mr David has
told his allies to remain loyal to the Prime Minister but
friends said he could put his name down for Prime
Minister.

One said: “There is absolutely no doubt that David
would go for it. He wants the job."
According to The Telegraph, Mr Davis said: “Barnier
needs this to work much more than I do... I'm retiring
after this, he's not!"
When asked if it would be in June 2019 he said "yes",
before claiming that Boris Johnson can deal with the
transitional period.
He added: "Boris is back inside the tent now, he has
been tied to the tent pole.”
The news comes amid reports the Brexit Secretary
believes Mrs May’s leadership is so unstable that she
may be forced to resign before the UK leaves in 2019.
Allies of Mr David have called on him to act as interim
leader if May is ousted.

A source close to Mr Davis said the Brexit secretary
believes he will finish his job by June 2019 after
delivering an exit from the EU, at which point his
department will take a back seat.
Another ally of Mr Davis told The Telegraph the
Secretary sees Brexit as his legacy and “the one thing
he will be remembered for”.
They added that he wants a good deal and an easy
transition.
Mr Davis said that Barnier needs to "work much more
than I do"
But ministers are casting doubt about how well talks
are progressing.
One minister privately suggested that “Brussels still
thinks we will bottle it” and another said senior figures
in the EU who think Britain does not want to leave.
Mr Davis hinted that Boris Johnson should take over
during the transitional period
Some have suggested that Mr Davis should make it
clear that the UK is prepared to walk away without a
deal.
Mr Davis is known as “Monsieur Non” in France, as
they see him as a tough negotiator.
