Draconids in the night sky
The peak of the meteor shower is expected on the
evening of Sunday October 8.
To get a clear view of the meteor shower, it you
should go to a dark rural area away from any light
pollution.
You do not need any specialised equipment, such as a
telescope or binoculars, as you can see the shower
with the naked eye.
Space website Earthsky.org said: “Unlike most meteor
showers, the Draconids are best seen in the evening,
instead of before dawn.
”Remember – no matter where you are on Earth – the
radiant for this meteor shower is highest up in the
evening.”
Europe, North America and Asia will give you the best
views of the Draconids in the night sky.

What are the Draconids?
Draconids are created when the Earth passes through
the dust debris left behind by the comet 21P /
Giacobini-Zinner.
The 21 P/ Giacobini-Zinner comet was discovered by
Michel Giacobini on December 20, 1900.
Following Giacobini’s discovery, another sighting by
Ernst Ainner in 1913 added his surname to the
comet’s name.
The comet takes about 6.6 years to make a single
revolution around the Sun.
Following the highly anticipated event this weekend a
second meteor shower, the Orionids, will also take
place later this month and usually peaks on October
21.
