The Sheffield Hallam Labour MP was suspended on
Tuesday over alleged homophobic and misogynistic
comments – with some claims being made against
him as recently as this year.
Mr O’Mara was previously part of the Commons
Women and Equalities Committee before he was
forced to apologise over comments he made online in
2002 and 2004.
And one local resident told the BBC’s daily politics
show Mr O’Mara called her an “ugly b***h” and other
comments that “aren’t broadcastable” three months
before the election that saw him unseat former Deputy
Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
Now a Sun investigation has revealed the party were
aware of his online comments before they were made
public, but allowed the MP to continue in his post.

Asked why it took so long to withdraw the whip from
Mr O’Mara, a spokesman for Jeremy Corbyn claimed
they had started investigating allegations as soon as
they were made aware of them, adding that “nothing
came to the party central office until Monday”.
He said: “It was obviously heinous in 2002 and 2004 –
the point being we weren’t aware of the significant
later material.”
The spokesman added: “when the initial material came
to light an investigation was launched.”
But when confronted, Labour admitted they already
knew about the allegations.

They said: “Last month, our press office received a
partial report of some of Jared O’Mara’s 2004 online
comments, which have subsequently received
coverage in the press.
“He was spoken to by officials and subsequently
issued a response that day.”
Prior to the suspension, Shadow Chancellor John
McDonnell called Mr O'Mara's comments, made in
2002 and 2004, “unacceptable”.
Mr Corbyn was ridiculed during Prime Minister’s
Questions on Wednesday following the allegations,
with Tory MP Nicky Morgan mocking the Labour leader

Ms Morgan asked Mr Corbyn: "Next year sees the
centenary of the first woman member of parliament.
"Would my right honourable friend tell us what
leadership and encouragement to the women and girls
in his constituency to take part in public life the
member for Sheffield Hallam has shown in his
remarks?"
In response to the question, Parliament erupted and
Jeremy Corbyn faced MPs shouting "Jeremy", "Oh,
Jeremy", "Jeremy, are you listening?”.
