The dresses, in good condition 30 years on, are
expected to fetch at least £800.
Until now they have been in a box in the attic of
Mirror reporter Harry Arnold and were discovered by
his widow Mary Gold when she moved house after he
died in 2014.

She said: “About 15 years ago he spoke to the
duchess’ PA and asked her if she wanted them back
and the PA said no.
“He was very fond of the Duchess of York.”
One-off charity event It’s a Royal Knockout was the
brainchild of Prince Edward and was shown on UK
television in June 1987.
Staged on the lakeside lawn of Alton Towers it saw
Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and
Sarah Ferguson in pantomime costumes leading
teams of celebrities going head-to-head in slapstick
games for charity.
It raised more than £1 million for charities but was
widely regarded as a PR disaster for the royals. The
Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Charles did not take
part.
Afterwards, Prince Edward lost his temper and
stormed out of a press conference when he didn’t get
the response he wanted from journalists after asking
them what they thought of it.
“Thanks for being so bloody enthusiastic”, he said,
before walking out.
Director at Canterbury Auction Galleries, Dave Parker,
said the dresses have “a modest estimate but a much
higher price could very well be achieved”.
Harry Arnold was the Daily Mirror’s Chief reporter for
12 years, covering stores including wars in the Gulf
and Kosovo and the floods in Mozambique.
He died in November 2014 survived by his wife Mary,
four children and six grandchildren.
The dresses will go under the hammer at Canterbury
Auction Galleries in Kent on October 3.
Mary said she was going to put the money towards a
special headstone for Harry’s grave.
