'You voted AGAINST national interest!' British MEP blasted over vote to block trade talks

Mary Honeyball, a Labour MEP for London, was among
the 26 British representatives in Strasbourg who have
been accused of betraying their own country.
Ms Honeyball and her colleagues voted for a proposal
put forward by the E uropean Parliament's Brexit chief
Guy Verhofstadt , that urged the EU not to start trade
talks with the UK.
The 26 were branded "appalling" by one Tory MP, who
accused them of deliberately voting against Britain’s
national interest on Brexit .
Nigel Farage said the vote represented how the EU
treated the UK as a hostage and demanding their
ransom.
Earlier today, Theresa May barred two of their own
MEPs after they broke the party whip and voted for a
motion demanding UK do more to meet EU demands.

own country for forcing the vote
The EP motion urged the EU to reject trade talks with
the UK
Anushka Asthana, hosting BBC's Politics Europe this
afternoon, challenged the Labour MEP on her
reasoning for the "unpatriotic vote".
Asthana asked: "It is the national interest of the UK to
push on to trade talks, so why did you vote against the
national interest?"
Ms Honeyball tried to defend her move by blaming her
own country for forcing the vote.
She said: "We voted for the resolution because we
want to see the talks continue.
"We are concerned that there has been a lack of
progress, largely down to the UK side.
"The UK agreed to the issues that would be resolved
first - the Irish border, financial settlement and EU
citizens - we agreed on that, and the issues are just
not resolved yet."

Flynn branded the vote "remorselessly hostile to the
national interests of our own country"
Ukip
MEP
Patrick O'Flynn, also a guest on the show, branded the
vote "remorselessly hostile to the national interests of
our own country".
He said Britons could not believe how someone could
vote against their own national interest unless they
badly wanted to sabotage Brexit .
Mr O'Flynn added: "We need to get onto the trade deal
because we surrender all the issues that we have
leverage over."
Asthana added to this, claiming that the move could
be a "wrecking tactic" of Remainer MEPs.
Ms Honeyball rejected this: "My constituents in London
come from Europe. They are real people, they are
really worried.
"I am not trying to wreck Brexit."
