You can't fail to have noticed that the 90s are making
a strong comeback this season. Chokers, corsets, slip
dresses and slogan tees have taken the high street by
storm.
But the return of the Timberland boot has tipped
certain fashion writers over the edge.
With the Kardashians, Rhianna, the Hadids and even
Hailey Baldwin getting in on the act, it would seem
that EVERYONE loves the footwear classics!
Everyone, except our fashion stylist Lauren Goodwin-
Grafton.
PROMOTED STORIES
Lauren and our fashion director Amber Graafland fight
the case for and against the iconic yellow boot.
Lauren: If you ask me Timberland
boots are a NO NO…
There’s a reason the Timberland was originally
designed as a hard wearing boot for New England
construction workers back in 1973, and that’s because
that’s where they belong…on the building site.
I remember them re-surfacing as a big trend back in
the 90s, when I was busy strutting around in my Spice
Girl platforms and crop tops, I didn’t really pay them
much attention even then.
As far as women wearing the Timberlands go, it was
Jennifer Lopez who stood out for me. You’d regularly
spot the star in baggy combats, utility style jumpsuits
and the tan lace up boot. She even trialled the more
‘feminine’ version which came complete with a stiletto
heel.
Now they were even scarier. Call me a slave to
fashion, I love a crippling heel, but not even these
could convince me they were a sound investment.
Plus when it comes to styling them, you’ll have a
tough job making these bad boy boots look good. With
jeans? A leather skirt? A girlie dress? No sorry, you’ll
still look like you’ve been working on a yellow digger
all day. Unless that's the look you're going for.
If beauties like J Lo and Kendall Jenner can’t entice
me to purchase a pair even in 2017, I’m sorry to say
no one can. I’ll be putting my £110 towards a nice
pair of patent ankle boots this winter.
Boys we may have stolen your tees and slouchy
jeans, but this is one trend you can keep…
Amber: If they're good enough for
golden balls, they're good enough for
me
Fashion is a funny old thing. And it’s also very fickle.
It only takes the right designer at the right time to
turn today’s fashion faux pas into tomorrow’s hot new
fad.
Take the bum bag. The much maligned item, worn by
travelling tourists in the mid-80s (and my dad) is one
of this year's biggest trends - I kid you not.
And this week Alessandro Michele sent shell suits
down the Gucci runway in Milan. As the industry
designer du jour, and one of the most emulated
labels, expect to seeing these in the stores the
minute spring arrives.
Scared, you should be.
Which brings me to my point. The Timberland Boot.
Whatever you used to think about them it’s time to
empty your memory bank.
Forget 90s Timberland fans Wu Tang Clan, Mobb
Deep and DMX. Irrelevant. Cast aside all memories of
J-Lo in the heeled version. And Mark Wahlberg and
Britney Spears in the early noughties? Simply didn’t
happen.
Times have changed and so has style.
