Narcos season 4: Will the Cali Cartel return in the next series? What will happen?

After the death of Pablo Escobar in the season two
finale, fans were left wondering if and how the series
could continue.
But Escobar was just one part of “the continuing story
of cocaine” which showrunner Eric Newman has had
planned since the show’s inception, with the Cali
Cartel forming the second chapter.
The Calis worked with authorities to take down
Escobar, but once he was gone they simply stepped in
to fill the vacuum in Colombia’s drug trade.
When Pena returned to the US Drug Enforcement
Agency (DEA) in season three, he learned that the
Cartel was negotiating a deal with the government to
close their operation in exchange for token prison
sentences and keeping their fortunes.

The deal, of course, went awry, and Pena found
himself waging what at times felt like a futile war
against the Cartel.
Against the odds he managed to get all four kingpins
behind bars, with some inside help from the Cali’s
head of security Jorge Salcedo.
Pena quit the DEA in the season three finale after
uncovering the true depth of the authorities’
collaboration with the enemy.
Newman has hinted that both Pena and the Cali’s
story is finished, teasing another reinvention for the
show for Narcos season four .

Narcos: The series will tell 'the continuing story of
cocaine'
“We continue to focus on the foreign threat, those
guys in Latin America who keep sending us their
cocaine as if we're not the greatest market for
cocaine in the world,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“What we're trying to do on Narcos is paint an evolving
picture of a very complicated, largely failed enterprise
to fight drugs on foreign soil.
“What we're really doing is playing an international
version of whack-a-mole, where we smash the head of
one cartel and another cartel picks up the ball without
missing a step.
“That's what we've seen and what we continue to see.
Any attempt to control it is doomed unless we're
looking inward and attacking the demand for cocaine,
because that's really the problem.”

Season four is set to move the action to Mexico,
which Newman said “past a certain point – and I think
we’ve just reached that point in the show – became
the kings of the cocaine game”.
He appeared to confirm that Pena’s retirement will
stick this time around, explaining: “I do think that
we've told Pena's story pretty effectively.”
When asked if season four will feature an entirely new
cast, Newman replied: “It's definitely on the table.”
Newman was interviewed before the death of location
scout Carlos Muñoz Portal, who was found shot dead
in this car while searching for locations in rural
Mexico.
Narcos: Pedro Pascal has warned that season four
might not happen
Pedro Pascal, who played Pena, called his death
“tragic” and said that the series would not be able to
continue if producers couldn’t guarantee the cast and
crew’s safety.
“We can’t do it if it’s not safe, we’re talking about
lives,” he told TMZ.
“If they want to do it they’ll figure it out in a safe
way.”
Netflix has paid tribute to Munoz and his family with a
statement which read: “We are aware of the passing
of Carlos Munoz Portal, a well-respected scout, and
send our condolences to his family.
“The facts surrounding his death are still unknown as
authorities continue to investigate.”
Narcos is available on Netflix.
