Canada claims Britain's post-Brexit trade deal can be 'even better' than EU agreement

The Canadian High Commissioner, Janice Charette,
said the UK and Canada could strike an “even better
agreement” than what the country has in place with
the EU.
Canada has recently agreed a trade deal with the
Europen Union which took seven years to negotiate
and complete.
Ms Charette insisted the UK could complete a deal
which would be “even better” than Canadian’s
agreement with the bloc once Brexit is complete.
She told LBC : “What the Prime Minister has talked
about is making sure we can continue to preserve
what’s available to business under the current Canada-
EU trade agreement and then once UK leaves EU we’d
be in a position to talk about an enhanced trade
relationship.

“Our goal really is to take advantage of what is in
place now, let’s preserve and make sure there’s
continuity in the relationship as you exit and then
position for an even better agreement in the future.
“I don’t want to rule out the possibility that we can do
even better with the UK in the future.
“Mr Trudeau said are already beginning the technical
discussions, necessary to be able to understand how
we would complete the deal. There is lots of work we
can do in advance of Brexit.”
According to Ms Charette, Canada’s trading
partnership with the UK is the largest in the EU.
The
Prime
Minister met with the Canadian Prime Minister earlier
this month to discuss a future relationship post-Brexit.
Before meeting Mr Trudeau, the Government said it
was to discuss “cementing a strong trade and
investment partnership”.
Canada’s deal with the EU, named the Ceta
agreement, will eliminate 98 per cent of Canadian
import duties.
Mr Trudeau said the Ceta agreement in place between
the EU and Canada would be a good basis for a
transitional deal but that the new agreement with the
UK would include several “improvements.”
Speaking after his meeting with Mrs May earlier this
month, he added: “As the UK has demonstrated time
and time again its support for this trade measure, we
will be able to move forward in a way that benefits in a
smooth transition that keeps the essence of Ceta
applicable to the UK in ways that will respect the EU's
requirements and rules.

“We are very confident we will be able to continue the
strong trade ties and relationship with the UK
throughout the period of transition.”
Speaking after the meeting, Mrs May echoed Mr
Trudeau's comments, insisting the UK could create a
“seamless transition” with Canada after Brexit.
“We want to ensure that when we leave the European
Union, for businesses and people, that change is as
smooth and orderly as possible,” she said.
“And working on Ceta as becoming the first of the
bilateral trade relationships between the UK and
Canada that means that seamless transition can take
place.”
