Lord Andrew Turnbull, who was the Cabinet Secretary
under Tony Blair, said the Government will fall and
won’t be able to carry on if MPs dismiss a final Brexit
vote.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4, Mr Turnbull said: “I think it
means that the Government falls, actually. The
government can’t carry on and therefore we end up
with an election.
The crossbencher said the “life of the Government will
depend on” the result of the parliament's Brexit deal
vote.
Mr Turnbull said: “If they can’t get people to accept
the deal that they have negotiated in and have
presented, I don’t think they can survive.
Lord Turnbull said that a final Brexit deal must be
explicitly supported
“And then we have a major constitutional crisis.”
Theresa May announced last week that she is
confident a final Brexit vote would happen before the
March 2019 deadline.
Mrs May said she believes MPs will have a vote on the
final Brexit deal “in time for parliament to have the
vote we committed to”.
Mr Turnbull also said he is unsure what the result will
be but explained that a final Brexit deal should be
“explicitly supported”.
Mr Turnbull also explained that parliament does not
have to accept or reject the final deal, he said there
will be other choices that still involves Britain leaving
the European Union.
Brexit Secretary David Davis was made to clarify a
comment made on a final Brexit vote after he
suggested that parliament may not get a vote on the
deal until after Britain has left the Brussels bloc.
Mr Davis claimed that Brexit deal might only be agreed
"at the 59th minute of the 11th hour” – meaning that
MPs would not have a chance to vote on a final Brexit
deal.
But hours after this claim, Mr Davis said he "fully
expects" MPs to get a "meaningful" vote in time.
