The 10 dirtiest Liverpool vs Manchester United clashes ahead of 61st North-West Derby of Premier League era

The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United
is one of the biggest in world football.
This clash is one of the highlights of the football
calendar and has no love loss between fans.
It’s a fixture famed for its charged atmospheres, and
sometimes the passion in the crowd spills out onto
the pitch.
There have been 60 Liverpool-Manchester United
games held in the Premier League era.
A total of 15 of those games have seen at least one
player sent off and the average match sees four
cards being dished out.
But which North-West Derby saw the most?
Here we take the number of yellows, second yellows
and reds dished out in every match between
Manchester United and Liverpool in the Premier
League era to see which has been the dirtiest.
We have awarded one point for a yellow, two for a
second yellow and three for a red, similarly to how
points are awarded in the Fair Play League.

to a goal from Peter Crouch.

Nemanja Vidic and Ryan Giggs.

Paul Scholes was sent off with just four minutes left
on the clock after raising his hand to Liverpool
midfielder Xabi Alonso.
It didn’t hold United back though who went on to win
thanks to an injury time goal from John O’Shea.

Steven Gerrard saw red just 38 seconds after coming
on as a half-time substitute.
The game nearly saw another red card after already-
booked Mario Balotelli was pushed into the advertising
hoardings by Chris Smalling.
The Italian striker got up with fury in his eyes but was
held back by a Liverpool fan Shaun Leatherbarrow
who later said: “I was worried he’d get sent off.”
United eventually won the game thanks to a beautiful
scissor kick by Juan Mata.

No players picked up a red card in this game but eight
were booked in a match where tempers frequently
flared.
Jaap Stam, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Jamie Carragher,

picked up yellow cards in this game.

Andrew Cole received a second yellow for lashing out
at Liverpool’s Rigobert Song who was also booked.
Cole had scored the second of United’s three
eventual goals that day with a Jamie Carragher own

Jamie Redknapp, Titi Camara, Phil Neville and David
Beckham all picked up yellow cards as well.

The Serbian picked up his second booking after Daniel
Sturridge went down in the penalty area.

Gerrard penalties but Luis Suarez made it three-nil in
the 84th minute.

With United two-one down in the 76th minute and
having let Steven Gerrard through on goal, Nemanja
Vidic brought the Liverpool midfielder down and was
subsequently sent off.
Fabio Aurelio scored the resulting free-kick to make it
three-one.
Five other players were shown yellow cards that day -
Edwin van der Saar, Ri Ferdinand, Jamie Carragher,
Martin Skrtel and Javier Mascherano.

games against Liverpool.

An injury time from David Ngog secured the three
points for Rafa Benitez’s side though who moved up
into fifth place.
Jamie Carragher, Patrice Evra and Dimitar Berbatov
picked up the other yellow cards.
